Greek Roots: Kinder-Style!
My kindergarten kids had a great time with our lessons from the Greek Roots unit! I chose to work on the prefix un- and using -s to make plural words. We completed the lessons whole group and I projected the picture book on our whiteboard and we read about how prefixes and suffixes have the power to change the meaning of words! We also read about how adding -s or -es to words makes them plural.
After reading the picture book and discussing what we read, the kids were able to cut out their own puzzle pieces and add the prefix un- or plural -s to the end of a word by gluing them down. Then, they wrote the new word they made.
After finishing their independent part of the lesson, we came together and each child shared the word that he/she made and we talked about what the words meant and how they were changed by the prefix or suffix. It was a great way to get some vocabulary practice in!

WOW!! I LOVE how it looks on the overhead!! I truly believe that just a little bit of practice everyday in all grade levels is beneficial for students. Students will have such a deeper understanding of the meaning of words and they will think more critically when reading independently as they go into higher grades.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!! Thank you for putting so much time and effort into this linky & thank you for participating!!
